PLANNING A HOLIDAY
Whether you’re a seasoned globe-trotter or you take your holidays in the same place every year, you’ll need to plan to get the most out of what’s likely to be the most important event of the year. Holidays mean so much to so many of us; the chance to unwind and get away from the stresses of daily life, the opportunity to spend more time with loved ones or a way to experience different cultures and lifestyles. So choosing the right holiday, at the right time, in the right location is a challenge in itself.
Budget
Before flicking through the brochures of exotic locations it’s sensible to work out how much you’ve got to spend on your holiday. If you’re clear about this right from the planning stage you won’t be disappointed trying to plan a holiday you can’t afford. If you’re lucky enough that money is no object the world is your oyster!
When working out the holiday budget allow for the cost of travel, accommodation and spending money to enjoy yourself. It’s always a good idea to take a credit card in case of emergencies – having no access to money in a foreign country can be a frightening experience. Don’t take all your spending money in cash. Use either travellers cheques or draw cash out from local banks. Most European banks allow you to use your debit card to draw out cash, although there is usually a charge.
Timing
Decide when the best time to go on holiday is for you and your family or travelling companions. You may be restricted to school holidays, when prices are often more expensive and holiday destinations are often busier. If you can take children on holiday in term time and their school allows it you’ll make some substantial savings.
Checking your destination’s weather, average rainfall, temperature and average hours of daily sun is a good idea, particularly if you’re going to a more exotic location. Be aware if your destination is prone to hurricanes, monsoons or storms at particular times of the year.
Where to Go
Powder white beaches under tropical palms, all-inclusive fun-filled action packed days, breathtaking scenic walks, exhilarating skiing down the slopes, cruising the Mediterranean ……….. your choice of holiday is a very personal thing. This also applies to the type of accommodation you plan to book. You might be more comfortable in a hotel than a do-it-yourself villa or cottage, or you may prefer to be more independent and camp or caravan.
You may be someone who loves to lie on the beach all day or you may prefer to explore your destination. Whatever you enjoy if you’re travelling with other people try and include activities each day that everyone enjoys. If people like doing different things on holiday suggest you all do what you like during the day and meet in the evenings.
Don’t Forget
The longer in advance you book the better deal you’re likely to get. Ensure you get passports, visas and vaccinations well in advance of your travel date. Remember to find a willing volunteer to take you to the airport and book a hire car if you need one at the other end. And most importantly, make sure you have an up-to-date travel insurance policy – you never know when the unexpected may happen.
